I have been looking forward to interviewing this gorgeous lady for a while now. Amy Zempilas is such a divine soul. She is truly one of the most genuine and kind people I have come across and it shines through in everything she does. A devoted wife to Basil Zampilas and mother to three beautiful children, she also runs her own lifestyle blog Absolute Amy.
When I first met Amy all I could think about was how sweet she was. She was so happy and smiling even after explaining she had only 3 hours of sleeps the night before. It’s not often you meet someone who is not only sweet but genuine and honest in their nature.
Here we talk to Amy about how she copes being a mother, blogger and wife to an extremely busy husband.
My first paid job would have been babysitting when I was around ten or eleven. It seems so young now but I have two younger brothers and I was very confident and capable with kids even way back then.
LIFE BEFORE MOTHERHOOD
I lived in Dubai for four years in my twenties working for an International airline travelling the world. It was a really exciting time which took me to places like London, Casablanca, Moscow, Rome, Nairobi, Singapore and Christchurch just to name a few with amazing holidays in places like The Greek Islands, New York, The Bahamas, Malta, Miami, Rio Di Janeiro and Marrakech. Despite all my travelling, there are still so many places I want to see!
After my first year of motherhood, I felt like I wanted something just for me. I’d started following a few blogs which really inspired me and I considered starting my own. After a really inspiring conversation with a friend who told me to just go for it, I came home and within a few hours I had set up my own blog!
A TYPICAL DAY…
My hubby’s alarm goes off at 4.20am, if I’m lucky I’ll get back to sleep until my girls wake up around 6am, then it’s breakfast and getting ready for the day ahead. Some days we have appointments and Ava has kindy or ballet so we are racing out the door, and other mornings are a bit more relaxed. If the weather allows, I love taking my girls for a walk in the double pram or ‘Winnebago’ and I’ll run errands while getting some fresh air and exercise. My hubby usually comes home for lunch, so most days we’re lucky enough to have lunch as a family – then it’s playing catch up with groceries, housework and emails until ‘happy hour’ which is dinner, bath and bed for my girls by 6pm. My hubby gets home from work at 7pm and we’ll have dinner together and catch up before bed time.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE EVERYTHING?
It’s just our kind of normal and I’m used to being a solo parent a lot of the time. In saying that, we are very lucky that Baz often has a few hours between radio and TV where we can hang out, even if he has to take phone calls in between. I’ll walk the girls into town and we’ll meet him for a coffee and catch up before he has to head off to Channel 7. Baz is interstate for his AFL commentary work most weekends during football season, so the girls and I keep ourselves busy by catching up with family and friends and visits to local parks and farmers markets.
INSPO COMES FROM…
Everywhere! From music, books, movies, blogs, but mostly from people, especially from my hubby and children.
I feel like I’m surrounded by role models, my hubby with his ‘work hard and be nice to people’ approach, my mum and Nan who are the most thoughtful and kind people, my Dad who is our go to go guy – we call him ‘Flat Pack Paul’ and ‘Poppa Paul Daycare’ and my friends who I admire and aspire to be more like in some way.
THREE THINGS WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU
I love to sing, I would have loved to attend WAAPA (if I was good enough, of course!) but now have a very captive audience – my three kids! My hubby used to call me an ‘enthusiastic cook’ which meant I tried hard but wasn’t very good, but with lots of practice – I’m getting much better!I grew up without a TV and went to almost twelve different schools growing up, including in Tasmania and the UK.
WHERE DO YOU FIND BALANCE
It’s not always easy to find balance, but I think it’s really important to find something every day just for me – even if it’s a relaxing bath after the girls go to sleep or a Pilates or yoga class. I have learnt that at some point I need to finish my day and just switch off.
TOP TIPS FOR HEALTH & WELLBEING
1) Eat well! I think we overcomplicate things when it comes to our health, if we all ate lots of nutritious, healthy food we’d all be much better off when it comes to our health.
2) Move every day – even if it’s a fifteen minute weight session on the floor while your kids crawl over you or walking to the local shops or park. Consistency is key when it comes to exercise. You don’t have to join a gym or do boot camp to exercise, just get moving!
3) Find time to just be, whether it’s ten minutes before the start of the day to reflect and be grateful, a quiet coffee at a local cafe or a Pilates class…. it’s so important to have a healthy mind as well as a healthy body.
